Cream’s Ginger Baker undergoes open heart surgery

Ginger Baker, legendary founder of the band Cream, is recovering after undergoing open heart surgery last month. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame drummer also injured himself during an unspecified fall around the same time.

Back in February, Baker posted on his website that a doctor had given him some news that was a “big shock.” “No more gigs for this old drummer,” he wrote. “Everything is off…. of all things I never thought it would be my heart.” Then, in a more recent post, his daughter Leda wrote that her father was in recovery following “open heart surgery and a bad fall.”

“He called the day after his surgery to say he was OK,” Leda wrote. “Albeit a rather disoriented and unintelligible conversation he was at least awake and aware. The fall has resulted in swollen legs and feet which he is seeing his doctor about in the next day or so.”

Though it would seem Baker is getting better, there has been no update since Leda’s post. Baker previously canceled a tour with his band Air Force after receiving his initial diagnosis, and his daughter went on to say that “any performances in the near future seem over ambitious.”
